Reviews requested

March 23, 2011 Leave a comment

Obviously I haven’t updated the site in a while, but I would like to change that. I have a hard time keeping up with all of my current podcasts, so I haven’t tried many new ones. I will try to get some new reviews in here, but I also want to open it up to those who use the site. If you like a certain podcast (listed here or not), feel free to submit a review as a comment. I will then post them and credit you as the author, or you can choose to do so anonymously. Thanks in advance!

P.S. I apologize for the site outage earlier this week. It was a technical issue on my end.

Insight for Living

May 29, 2010 Leave a comment

Insight for Living is a half-hour radio broadcast distributed both domestically and internationally. It features the teachings of Chuck Swindoll, and is one of the more popular Christan podcasts on iTunes. Swindoll brings the wisdom and experience of his long career as a pastor, author, and president of the Dallas Theological Seminary. His presentation is slightly slower and more deliberate than the up-tempo style of Chip Ingram’s Living on the Edge.

Key of Three Study

April 14, 2010 Leave a comment

The Key of Three is a bible study by Dr. and Carol Miller. It is no longer active, but the 48 part study is a very deep and thorough look into the triune salvation of man (Justification, Sanctification, Glorification). It’s a relaxed, mellow presentation, but the message is essential – especially for new Christians. There is a Podcast feed, but it only has a small part of the study, and a few unrelated teachings. I suggest downloading the series episodes from the archive:

Precepts for Life

March 31, 2010 3 comments

Precepts for Life is a daily half-hour TV show and video podcast featuring the Inductive Bible Study methods of Kay Arthur. If you are looking for thorough bible study, this is probably the show for you. Arthur systematically examines chapters of scripture in great detail, and shows how you can mark up your Bible for future reference. It appears that this show is only available in Podcast form when you create an account on the LightSource.com web site. If anyone knows of a publicly posted feed URL, please leave it in the comments.

Truth for Life

Truth for Life is a radio show and podcast that presents the sermons of Alistair Begg. One common theme that I’ve noticed is an emphasis on local churches. Of course the Bible is the focus, but Begg passionately speaks to church leaders and congregations to stay true to their responsibilities. Originally from Scotland, Begg also brings an international element (and great Scottish accent!) to the sermons. The subject matter can be a bit dry, but is based in Biblical Theology.

A New Beginning with Greg Laurie

March 23, 2010 Leave a comment

A New Beginning is the daily version of Pastor Greg Laurie’s teachings. This new format breaks up sermons into several parts, rather than the weekly hour long “Harvest Podcast” episodes. Laurie is one of the most talented and polished speakers of the Podcasts that I’ve reviewed. He will certainly make you laugh while he makes you think. My only complaint is that A New Beginning has a lot more filler than Harvest Podcast (ie. intro music, preview clip, announcements, and in-between studio chatter).

Living on the Edge

Living on the Edge is a daily podcast featuring the teachings of Chip Ingram. The focus is “Discovering the Bible’s answers”, and it is a great starting place for new Christians. The topics tend to be practical, such as strengthening your marriage, understanding love and sex, raising moral children, and overcoming painful emotions. I’m not usually a fan of “self-help” podcasts, but this one is rooted in the Bible. It has given me several new perspectives that helped in my life’s journey. Just pay attention, because Ingram talks pretty fast sometimes!

Mars Hill Church: Mark Driscoll

March 17, 2010 Leave a comment

Pastor Mark Driscoll is the lead preaching pastor for Mars Hill, and the podcasts include bible-oriented sermons and event teachings. If I could use one word to describe Driscoll it would be “intense”. He reminds me of the guy on a football team who pushes everyone to the next level and leaves it all on the field himself. It can be quite inspiring, but sometimes comes across as arrogant. The podcast also weaves in contemporary pop culture references which add an element of humor. I read that Driscoll sometimes pushes the envelope with coarse language or controversial themes, but I haven’t come across it.

Calvary Chapel St. Petersburg

I came across the Calvary Chapel St. Petersburg Sermon Series based on positive reviews. It’s usually a recording of sermons by pastor Danny Hodges, but sometimes others. One thing I really appreciate about this podcast is the time it spends in the Old Testament – a refreshing change of pace from episodes dominated by the Gospels and Epistles. Hodges is an everyman kind of speaker that does a good job of bringing OT stories alive.

Bible Study Podcasts

March 13, 2010 Leave a comment

Bible Study Podcasts is currently running a weekly series on the book of Romans, as well as a brief daily look at Proverbs. It is hosted by Toby Logsdon, who is well studied in the philosophies of Norman Geisler. At times, especially last year’s apologetics series, the episodes can get a bit technical. Logsdon occasionally gets too deep into circular logic, but his Theology is sound and there is plenty to learn from the lessons. Also, Logsdon’s endearing personality and personal stories are an added bonus.
